Two Brighton fans stabbed in Italy ahead of Europa League last-16 first leg against Roma

Soccer fans stabbed in Italy is not the headline I thought I’d wake up to, but here we are. The men aged 27 and 28, who were also robbed during the attack, were able to take refuge in a nearby restaurant where an employee called the emergency services. They were taken to the hospital where their condition is not believed to be serious.

Police are investigating. Brighton face Roma in their Europa League last-16 first leg on Thursday night. Sussex Police are out in Rome, are aware of the incident, and have spoken to the two men.

Football Bet Club on Twitter: “Two Brighton fans were stabbed in Rome last night ahead of tonight’s Europa League round of 16 first leg tie against Roma. This is getting worse, every time football fans go to Rome they always want to hurt away supporters this has to stop Thoughts are with the Brighton fans🙏 / Twitter”

Violence has been plaguing soccer for decades, but several federations are trying to crack down. From racism in England to violence in Greece, many teams have been forced to play in front of empty stands over the past few years.

It’s not exclusive to men’s matches either. We reported on a women’s match that rescinded all tickets ahead of a match a month ago.

There’s been a ton of discussion on how to eradicate this violence. Nothing seems to be working. Fans seemingly come back even more aggressive after being banned from games. Lets hope, for the sport, someone finds the solution.
